A53 Type E Grade A & B

Valmont Tubing produces round electric resistance welded (ERW) steel tubing to meet ASTM specifications A53 Type E, Grade A and Grade B, often used for pressure applications and use in the conveying of gas, vapor, water or other liquids. While the ASTM A53 specification references nominal pipe sizes (NPS), Valmont produces tubing sizes up to 12.75" OD and in wall thicknesses up to 0.280" nominal that meet the requirements called out for in A53. Other Testing Requirements

Below are the required physical strength requirements under ASTM A53 Type E for grades A and B.

In addition to the chemical and physical analysis, the following tests are required under ASTM A53:

Test Test 
Flattening   Bend Test (Less than or equal to 2.375" OD) *
Hydrostatic* Transverse Weld Tension (Equal to or greater than 8.625" OD) 
Eddy Current   

Specification Notes

  • The hydrostatic test called out in ASTM A53 is not available for Valmont sizes produced less than 4.00" OD round. Valmont will need to take exception to that requirement at time of quotation and order.
  • The bend test for sizes less than or equal to 2.375" is not available to quote by Valmont. Valmont will need to take exception to that requirement at time of quotation and order.
  • If testing requirements differ from ASTM A53 requirements listed above, please note at time of inquiry and order placement.
